3 cheers for Jeff Angus at Management by Baseball! It took me about 6 weeks to produce the article I promised him, but only about 12 hours for him to polish it up and make it a decent read. Go check it out.
Good article. I've been thinking for some time that the Pirates aren't run at all like a business, since their idea clearly is to make money without spending any. I guess in reality they're just run like a very badly run business.
Actually Wilbur, if the Pirates were able to make money without spending any, they would be the best run business in the world. As Brian points out in the article, the issue is they spend money without any obvious plan as to why.
It's an interesting read, Bryan. I appreciated your take on responding to the pressure to "do something" in order to create a perception that they are trying to win. What has always puzzled me about the Pirates is that they have never let their prospects learn at the big league level. Ever since Jay Bell had that terrible, terrible start in 1989, and they had to send him back down to get his swing back, it's like the Buccos have been afraid of rushing someone. The only prospects I can remember being give a chance to fail at the major league level are Aramis and JVB. In fact, what was Aramis: 0 for his first 28? And he turned out better than anyone else the Pirates have developed in the meantime. Whoever in the organization is putting this governor on talent between the AAA level and the major league level needs to be ignored, ousted, or worse.
Great observation...and it goes directly to my point. The years of losing have created so much pressure that Pirate management is afraid to use 'unproven' talent at the major league level and instead prefers talent proven to be mediocre. Fear leads you to choose the known over the unknown, even when the known is unpleasant.
My belief is that holding a prospect at the same level too long does much more harm than promoting him too soon. A little bit of failure is good for everyone, and if someone is going to be a 'palyer', he's going to have to learn to overcome failure eventually. Shielding a player from failure, especially at lower levels, makes it that much harder to deal with it later.
All of this presumes a player receives adequate mentoring and coaching in order to deal with failure. But again, I believe that in order to be a top player, a level of fortitude enabling you to overcome failure is necessary.
Excellent article Brian & good comments by others. I would much rather see a team of young guys playing everyday, and find out whether they are your future or not then a bunch of has beens that you know aren't your future. If we lose 100 games with the young guys, so be it. It doesn't matter to me if we lose 85 or 100 games if we have a chance for significant improvement in the future.
Actually, the Pirates to an extent are making money without spending any . . . of their own. The taxpayers bought them a ballpark. McClatchy used very little of his own money to purchase his share of the team. A lot of it was in the form of government loans that, as I understand it, he's not required to repay unless he sells to somebody who moves the team elsewhere. They're now being heavily subsidized by other MLB teams. They've acknowledged that they made money last year, although McClatchy won't say how much. (He had no problem specifying how much he was supposedly losing.) The money they made, along with the subsidy from other teams, is not being spent to improve the team. McClatchy and Littlefield have said they won't spend more on the team until attendance increases. Thanks in large part to the free ballpark, the team is now worth well over twice what the owners paid for it, so there's no long-term risk to the minimal investment they made in it. So in fact they've got a thoroughly anti-capitalist situation where they don't have to risk any of ownership's funds in order to ensure a profit, despite producing an inferior product.
Sure enough, the payoff for the current ownership group comes at the end. They are in the golden position of having paid for a pre-PNC Park Pirates and being able to sell a team with a new, almost entirely free, stadium.
There was some risk when they bought that the Pirates would never have gotten a new stadium. But that risk was small, relatively speaking.
