Baseball Prospectus has posted their top 50 prospects for 2005. No prospective Pirates appear on the list. Zach Duke rates as an Honorable Mention. I think that says it all.
If it makes you feel any better, the Red Sox only have 2 (and they're pretty low, and Hanley Ramirez is a nutjob), and won the World Series last year. So, you're in good company.
It is FAR FAR FAR more important for the Pirates to have great prospects than it is for the Red Sox. The Red Sox have avenues other than their farm system for acquiring talent.
Besides...2 players on the list is better than average. (50 players, 30 teams)
One thing I would caution before beating yourself up about these ratings is that at one time H. Cota was rated the #1 catching prospect and #5 overall prospect in baseball. Scouts rate players on the 5 tools and to quote Moneyball "if they look good". While you can put stock in what they say - they are the experts - one has to step back and realize that the pirates AAA rotation is probably one of the best in baseball. People tend to put less stock in pirates prospects b/c over the last 10yrs they haven't panned out. Its like a company who's stock is consistently stangnant - even if they predict they will have a good year, the stock is still held back a few notches just b/c of past performance. Past performance is a good indicator of future returns, but not a guarantee. This is a VERY critical season for the Bucs - in the AAA league. If these pitchers can dominate and stay healthy, well, I think I'd be a little more excited coming into next season. Think about the hoopla coming into the '06 All Star game having the pirates as a young wild card contender with a bright future. Of course a few trips to Alabama by any of these AAA pitchers could change my outlook immediately.
