The Bad
For every great Sports Geek article, there are a dozen or so articles such as the one Goose Goslin subjected us to on Sunday.
In the
article, Goslin comes up with a brilliant solution to the Pirates' problems.
It is time to turn up the heat on the Pirates' ownership, management and
players. Let's quit babying the Buccos....
Let's not baby the Pirates anymore. Let's scream and yell when they stink, which they do. And, let's stay away from the ballpark, too.
I couldn't agree more. It's time the Pirate fan base stopped ignoring the fact that we haven't had a winner since "Bush's Iraqi Vacation, Part I" was popular in the theaters. We've obviously been far too accomodating these past dozen years. Nary a cross word is uttered in this town with regard to the way McClendon handles his bullpen. Noone has ever criticized Littlefield's trades, or McClatchy's tight purse strings. And all those sell-outs are merely a signal to the ownership that we like things as-is.
Ok, so obviously I have no idea what Goslin is talking about. This is a guy who used to host a daily sports talk radio show in this town. Doesn't he remember the roughly 6 million callers who wanted to voice their negative opinions on the air? And how in the hell is it supposed to help the team if attendance falls through the floor?
But wait...it gets even better! Goslin goes on to describe how the Pirates can turn their pitching staff into a juggernaut by making them "throw until they are tired", and "then pitch some more." I'm not kidding. He uses Jack McKeon and the Marlins as his example to follow. Of course, pitching until your arm falls off might not be the best strategy for a franchise that has produced operating table all-stars like Sean Burnett, Jon Van Benschoten, Bobby Bradley, Dave Williams, Kris Benson, among others.
Now, I'm all about unconventional solutions to difficult problems. But let me assure you that the reason the Pirates suck is not because the fans don't care, it's not because some fans still go to the game, and its not because we haven't ruined enough arms.

whoa whoa whoa, hold it right there! this is a family blog...no need to curse...if that's the bad, i hate to see the ugly.
yeah right...so anyway, has GG been hiding in a hole these last 12yrs? ok, so Friday (bobblehead night) and Saturday (crappy blanket night - yes i have several) were near sellouts, energy packed the park and they were 2 great games to watch. but honestly, the 84k+ that packed the stadiums over 3 games (thanks to the 19k on sunday - what no free giveaways?) was no indication of how this city feels. First of all the crowd boos A-Ram...Why???! He got TRADED; he did not leave on his own; he did not say nary one bad word when leaving (cough-plexico-cough). So that eliminate 35% of the fans there. Second we have the loyal cubs fans (I hate em and admire them at the same time - thanks for making it a fun game again). so let's eliminate another 30%. So that leaves us with about 9-10k per game of loyal pirate fans which is about right for any game that doesn't involve fireworks or bubbleheads or whatever.
So to those fans, stay away. have the pirates lose more money so they never compile a winning team. The sad thing is its been like this in pittsburgh for decades and probably will be for decades more. Pittsburgh sports fans love 2 things: the stillers and a winner. And sometimes when the stillers aren't winning, Pittsburgh fans stay home and get drunk.
oh and one more thing...saturday was the largest walk up crowd ever at the gates. There was a line to get tickets stretched up the clemete bridge! There was a line to get in the centerfield entrance back to Isabella St. As I walked up Isabella I felt as if I was at a real baseball city with the crowd and the energy to get in (all for a stupid blanket?). It was fantastic. To all those fans out there - let's be like the cubs fans - let's be the loveable losers. Let's keep demanding a winner! NEVER take it easy on inferior management! If we could get 25-30 thousand a game for even 2/3 the games it would be impressive. LETS GO BUCS.
