McClatchy to sell?
Baseball Monthly is reporting that a group led by Donald Silvers has made a serious offer to buy the Pittsburgh Pirates. According to the source, the Pirates have secretly been for sale since around the time the announcement was made that the 2006 All-Star Game would be played in Pittsburgh. Apparently, Silvers turned his eye towards the Pirates after his bid to purchase the Minnesota Vikings was rejected. Although Silvers is from Seattle, he does have ties to the area as his wife is from Cleveland.
McClatchy must be betting that the value of the franchise will never be higher, with the impending All-Star Game and the young, inexpensive talent the Pirates have accumulated. Plus, he's probably also anxious to dump the team before the next great free agency exodus hits the Bucs, which would undoubtedly destroy whatever goodwill is left from the building of PNC Park and the 2006 All-Star Game.

I live in Yonkers, NY and have been an inhabitant of the NY metro area for most of my life. However, as a somewhat perverted 10 year old, I began my long rooting association with the Pirates in 1957. Damn the Yankees - they were sooo boring. Although I have seen the Pirates play many times at Shea and a few games at Bradenton, I have never seen a game in Pittsburgh. To call the Pirates something other than the Pittsburgh Pirates seems almost blasphemous.
Mr. Silvers is from Seattle. Might that translate into the Portland Pirates?
If McClatchy wants to sell can't he find a buyer in the Pittsburgh area who will assure their fans that the Pirates will stay in Pittsburgh?
