ESPN's ticker has been running a blurb all day that reads as follows:
"3 Pirates minor leaguers suspended for failing drug tests last year"
There's a perfect example of using the truth to mislead. There is no mention of the dozens of other players on other teams that were suspended. Worse yet, 2 of the players were playing for other organizations when they failed the tests! So, thanks ESPN for kicking us when we are down.
On a side note, did anyone read Peter Gammons' preseason predictions? Naturally he predicts David Ortiz will win the AL MVP. But in hilarious fashion, he then predicted that Nomar Garciaparra will win the NL MVP. Come on Peter...it's OBVIOUS you root for the Red Sox, but don't be sooooo predictable. It reminds me of the guy in every roto league that resorts to selecting players that used to play for his favorite team after all the current players are taken.

You shouldn't dump on Ortiz. He is a very talented hitter that frankly should be playing the field as well (he can do it). He might very well be the MVP in the AL, I'm not so sure why that's so out there. As for the canned retort "I hate everything Red Sox, they can just buy their way to the top", remember that the Sox signed Ortiz for $1.5 mil after he was released by MIN. Nomar is clearly the wrong call, and Gammons clearly has a Boston streak in him (he lives here). But, give Ortiz a chance. He was the MVP of the playoffs last year, by far.
PMM - I agree you can find bias wherever you want to find it, but come on. The day before 48 players were suspended from the AL alone. By my math thats more than 3 per team. The Pirates only had 1 test positive under their watch!! But the headline implicates the Pirates as the juice-team. A proper headline would have read something like:
"3 Pirates minor leaguers suspended for steroids bringing the total to 51 players overall."
Who was dumping on Ortiz? Great example of seeing bias wherever you want to find it.
I find it hilarious that you can read my post and translate it as "I hate everything Red Sox, they can just buy their way to the top." In fact, judging by your comment, I'm guessing you only read the first sentence or 2 before commenting.
Let me make my intended point as clearly as possible, no inference required: The lead analyst for a national news organization should not use his post to cheerlead. It's ok for Joe Schmo at the Podunk City Gazette to display bias towards the Podunk City Baseballers.
But when you are supposed to cover all teams for a national audience, you are supposed to display a level of objectivity. CLEARLY Gammons is incapable of this and therefore loses credibility.
Now go back and finish reading my post.
